Engaging people workshop by Walter Bradley

HPMA Northern Ireland Branch held a workshop on 7th December 2011 on Engaging People which was delivered by Walter Bradley from Dale Carnegie.

The aim of this workshop was to enable participants to improve staff engagement within their areas and to become more motivating and inspirational managers.

The session began by requiring attendees to list the challenges facing the service during 2012 and beyond. It was then highlighted that by engaging your team and being both inspiring and motivational that you as an organization are more able to meet the challenges that are being faced.

Walter Bradley then went through the triangle of success which comprises of skills, attitude and knowledge. It was highlighted that attitude is the most important element of this triangle and then stressed that managers should ensure they demonstrate a ‘can do’ and a positive attitude within their areas.

The importance of ensuring that teams operate outside of their comfort zone was discussed and Walter Bradley instilled genuine fear across all attendees when he announced that he had placed a marker under one attendee’s seat and that they would have to go to the front of the room and sing karoke to everyone! I have never seen so many worried looking HR professionals in a room before. The purpose of this was to show how it felt to be taken to the edge of the comfort zone. Thankfully no such marker was placed under anyone’s seat however it was noted by all that it was a very good, if not scary, illustration of this point!

Attendees were then taken through how to build trusting relationships and given really good and helpful advice in relation to how to do this successfully.

The HPMA would wish to congratulate Walter Bradley on his delivery of this extremely helpful and interactive workshop which was felt by the attendees as being both really timely and very useful.

Modernising Systems - Changing Practice Worshop

HPMA Northern Ireland Branch held a workshop on Modernising Systems – Changing Practice on 26th January 2011 in Fern House, Antrim Area Hospital.

The aim of the workshop was for Anne Hamill, Project Manager, Business Services Transformation, to provide attendees with up to date information on the progress being made on procuring a new system, to inform on the implications the new system would bring in terms of both policies and practice and to discuss how this strand of the Business Services Transformation Programme impacts on the shared services agenda.

The HPMA committee wish to congratulate Anne Hamill on her delivery of this workshop and are pleased to report that participants found her presentation both interesting and informative.  In particular participants commented that they were looking forward to working with the new system in the future and having the higher functionality it will bring.  Others noted that they had a greater appreciation of the work Trusts now need to undertake in preparation for the implementation of the new system.  Another welcomed benefit of the system was that it will provide service managers with a more responsive, efficient service that will allow them to focus on improving patient and client care.

Belfast Health and Social Care Trust’s Learning and Development win National Award

The Lifelong Learning Team, within Learning and Development, have won the National HPMA Award for Innovation in HR with their work on the Unleashing Talent Passport.

The Unleashing Talent Passport is a Level 2 Qualification based on the 6 core dimensions of the Knowledge and Skills Framework and is targeted at Bands 1 and 2 staff. With Essential Skills Literacy embedded into it, participants achieve 2 qualifications as part of their learning journey. The qualification is focused on service need and closely links participants’ job roles to the training provided. The project used this qualification as a means of accrediting the induction journey for staff within their Foundation Gateway year.

Through a close collaboration with partners including Service Groups, UNISON, Belfast Metropolitan College, Education Guidance Service for Adults and Widening Participation Unit, 3 cohorts of the programme have already been delivered.  The Trust is currently working with the Faculty of Health and Social Care at London South Bank University to conduct a full evaluation based on a Learning and Productivity Metric.

In presenting the award to Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, the judges commented:

“The panel was impressed by the great partnership working across local social and economic systems. The incentivised induction process has shown great value as a building block for staff’s personal and professional development. It also shows innovative development of learning and productivity metrics. The project shows great transformational potential, all the more significant when considered in the context of the challenges facing the area and the organisation.”
