Presented by Gerry Cavanagh, OD Consultant at NHS Lothian

‘Banter’ as defined in the dictionary is a “playful and friendly exchange of teasing remarks”, and a workplace that has healthy, friendly banter can be a brilliant experience and can lighten the mood of teams.

The reality is often something very different; something that isn’t playful nor friendly and bullying or discrimination in disguise. Although some things are said in genuine ignorance, some remarks are deliberately barbed to offend and the reason behind may ER referrals and/or the deterioration of workplace relationships. Getting the balance between a no fun, sterile workplace and one with healthy ‘fun’ banter fun is a difficult line to take and manage.

The aim of this session is to create more personal awareness and responsibility about what banter actually is, the behaviours that can underpin it and the impact and consequences, (positive and negative), for teams, individuals and the organisation.
