Introduction from Rachael Tyler - Programme Director
As we come to the end of the year it feels like a good time to reflect on the key highlights of the year for the HPMA London Academy and our ambitions for the coming year. We have had an extremely busy and successful year which has seen our programmes booking up quicker than ever before, our average satisfaction rates at their highest levels and welcomed a number of new members. We have worked closely with excellent  providers and sponsors to deliver a programme aimed at supporting workforce professionals to ‘be the change’ in their organisations. This was the title of our annual conference this year which was a fantastic opportunity to think innovatively about being the change and to celebrate the development achievements of some of our inspiring workforce leaders. We also established the first formal talent pool for aspirant Deputy Workforce Directors in the country. We are now in the process of commissioning a really exciting and stretching programme for next year and look forward to launching the next stage of our ASPIRE development programme. I wish all our members, sponsors and providers a happy Christmas and we look forward to continuing to work with you all in supporting the delivery of excellence in people management and development.
Commissioning for our 2020-21 programme 'Tomorrow's World Today', is well under way - here's a sneak peek!
Next year’s ASPIRE Deputy Director talent pool and ASPIRE HR BP programme
Our aspirant programmes and developing our talent management framework will continue to be a key focus in 2020. We plan to continue with the ASPIRE Deputy Director talent pool so if you plan to move into a Deputy Director role in the next 3 years, then you might want to consider applying to be in this talent pool. More details in the new year. Likewise, if you aspire to be an HR BP in the near future, we will be running another cohort of our ASPIRE BP programme so do talk to your manager and watch this space for more details.

Our new 2020/21 programme ‘Tomorrow’s World Today’
Thinking about what your development focus will be next year? We are currently speaking to lots of interesting providers about running sessions for next year’s Tomorrow’s World Today programme. Our plan is that it will consists of 5 strands:
  • Core programme
    • Being the workforce professional I want to be
    • Workforce professionals as effective change agents
    • Workforce professionals developing the business
    • Workforce professionals preparing for Tomorrow’s World
    • Workforce professionals developing core knowledge
    • Emerging workforce leaders for bands 4&5
  • Strategic HR&OD network and Deputies’ network
  • Development programmes to be offered to organisations on specialist development areas in partnership with a number of training providers
  • Development of resource hubs
  • Action learning sets

The Difference Meaning Makes to Our Work

I have just come back form working on behalf of TPC Leadership with a UNICEF Team based in Afghanistan.  I had 2 days with my co facilitator to run a team session with 18 leaders of teams who deliver their services to vulnerable children.    My colleague and I had no idea what it would be like to go to Afghanistan or what the team would be like.  All I knew is what I hear in the news about a country that has been at war for more than 15 years.   I had a mixture of worry and excitement, worry about my safety and excitement about working with such a team.

When we arrived we were met by a UNICEF official who transported us in a bullet proof car and took us straight to the UN compound.  There was then a process to gain access to the compound which involved us leaving our ID documents at the gate office and the car driving through two sets of walls and gates which were heavily guarded with security staff with guns.   We were then greeted warmly by the lead and made to feel very at home.  Our first stop was a security briefing where we were handed a security pack consisting of a walkie talkie, a phone, a bullet proof vest and helmet.  Then shown our nearest bunker if it may be needed.  By now I had a real sense of the incredible danger the staff worked in and the high risks they took to do their work. continue reading.......
