We are delighted to launch the Future People Leaders Programme (FPLP). This is a fabulous development opportunity for senior people professionals who are ready to take the next step in their career to a Deputy Director role. This is the first national programme of its kind and we therefore wish to engage with the HR and OD community to make this as successful as possible.

HPMA has partnered with NHS England to deliver the Future People Leaders Programme (FPLP) in conjunction with Cheryl Lee Associates. This programme is targeted at future people leaders who aspire to become deputy directors in the next 12 to18 months.

There will be 50 places available, across two cohorts in England; the North (North East and Yorkshire, North West and Midlands) and the South (East of England, South East, South West and London).

The programme is underpinned by a new competency framework (see below) which has been developed with HPMA, the NHS England Professional Development Board and existing Deputies.  The programme will comprise of 5 taught modules including a residential, masterclass sessions, action learning sets and a development centre.  Participants will be asked to undertake a business improvement project as part of the programme.  There is a fee of £2000 for each place on the programme which will be paid by the sponsoring organisation. This is also match funded by NHS England.

We want to increase representation in the profession, so we are encouraging as many applications as possible from underrepresented groups.

The programme will cover the following modules:

1. What sort of deputy do you want to be
2. Positioning yourself as a deputy – maximising you influence as a deputy
3. Your personal impact – operating with presence and gravitas
4. Leading transformational change – what skills and qualities are needed to lead transformational change
5. Building a creative and innovative mindset and function

To be eligible for this programme, you need to be a senior people professional working within the NHS, able to demonstrate your potential and ambition to move into a deputy director role in the next 12 to 18 months. Your organisation does not need to be an HPMA member.
