#HPMA2022 Conference Highlights
#HPMA2022 Conference Highlights
Last month we hosted our first national in-person event since 2019, the HPMA 2022 Conference! Attendees from across the U.K. came to spend two days of keynotes, breakout sessions, and exhibitions at the Hilton Metropole in Birmingham between 8th – 9th September.
Whether you missed out on your ticket this year, or just want to re-live the magic, here’s a run-down of what we got up to during the conference!
Past Presidents dinner
The night before our conference began, we invited all past HPMA presidents to come together and honour the rich history of HPMA’s work with a celebration dinner.
As part of this celebration, we commissioned a past presidents brochure which includes photos and personalised biographies for each president’s term with HPMA. It was such a thrill to have so many wonderful characters in a room together and they each got a limited edition hard-copy of the brochure to take home with them!
Day 1 – opening speeches
Registration began at 9am with attendees checking in and receiving their conference goodie bags! The bags included free water bottles courtesy of our gift-sponsor Tribepad, making sure attendees stayed hydrated throughout the busy conference.
Many thanks to gift sponsor @Tribepad for their fab water bottles – so important to keep hydrated! #HPMA2022 pic.twitter.com/bQ4u8XWLxt

Our HPMA Deputy President, Janet Wilkinson, gave a warm welcome with her opening remarks at 10am, and sent some virtual love to our Executive Director, Nicky Ingham, via the live-stream of her remarks as Nicky was unfortunately having to stay at home with Covid!

This was shortly followed by HPMA President, Dean Royles’, President’s address, where he spoke about the letter he had recently written to Rt Hon Therese Coffey MP, Secretary of State, adding “I have urged the new secretary of state not to make the mistake of undervaluing those who work in support of front-line care.” He argued for an increase in apprenticeship pay, vowed to stand with trade unions, and noted that a change of behaviour would be needed for NHS staff to succeed – “We have been trained as hunter gatherers competing for patients and competing for staff – we need to unlearn these behaviours.”
Dean has since turned his well-received opening speech into a blog post for those who may have missed it!

Change of plans
It was an action-packed first day and one sentiment in particular seemed to echo amongst attendees, speakers, and exhibitors alike – how amazing it was to finally be in a room together! It was a day to be cherished and we can’t wait to see everyone again soon.
Sadly, due to the heart-breaking news of the death of Her Majesty The Queen at the close of day 1 of the conference, we made the decision not to go ahead with our HPMA Awards ceremony or with day 2 of the conference, as the nation entered a period of mourning.
Rescheduled awards
Since the cancellation of the HPMA Awards Ceremony (and day two of the conference) on news of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, our teams have been working hard to find a suitable location and date to reschedule the event for our finalists, judges, sponsors and wider community.
Here is the plan which we think colleagues will feel is fair and fitting for our association and charity. We appreciate that it is a challenging time for many, but we hope that you agree that to celebrate the achievements of our finalists remains important.
- An awards ceremony and dinner celebration will be held in Birmingham on Thursday 1 December at The ICC: The International Convention Centre (Broad St, Birmingham B1 2EA).
- If you are an awards finalist, or your organisation purchased a ticket for you to attend the original event as you were part of the shortlisted team, HPMA is honouring your investment and offering you a free ticket to the rescheduled event.
- If you are a category sponsor, HPMA offers you four tickets for your team and shortlisting judge, free of charge. In addition, you are able to purchase additional tickets for any of your original guests at a reduced price.
- If you are one of our brilliant category judges who generously took part in our virtual judging panel sessions, we would also like to extend to you a free ticket to the rescheduled ceremony.
You can find out more about our upcoming rescheduled awards celebration here.
