Anti-Racist Leadership Programme
Anti-Racist Leadership Programme

HPMA London Academy working with the London Deputy Directors of HR network is delighted to launch the second cohort of the Anti-Racist HR and OD Leadership Programme.
We inviter senior HR/OD practitioners who are HPMA London Academy members to apply to join the Anti-Racist HR and OD Leadership Programme which will take place between April and November 2023. All participants need to be leading HR/OD directorates or functions and will need to have an executive sponsor.
This innovative programme will select a cohort of 28 HR/OD professionals with the capability and the ambition to start a quiet revolution in the anti-racist practice of HR/OD in the NHS. Such a revolution has to start from within, so this programme will give each participant the chance to reflect deeply on their own racialised identity and how that involves them inescapably in a system within which they experience racism and/or benefit from racism.
The participants will be supported to significantly increase their competence and confidence in tackling racism – in themselves, their teams and their organisations, including the subtle racism that allows us to tolerate or rationalise persistent and harmful inequalities of treatment and outcome.
The programme is open to all senior workforce professionals, both black, minority ethnic and white colleagues, who lead functions within their HR and OD directorate and who work within HMPA London Academy member organisations. This programme is funded by NHS England, London region. The only contribution we require from participating organisations, is £650 for an assessment tool (the Diamond Power Index) and coaching session.
We had lots of powerful feedback from the last cohort, here’s a view from one participant:
“The Anti-Racist Leadership course is one of the most important development opportunities I have had in my career to-date. Being part of the course has challenged me emotionally and intellectually, by not only understanding racism, but also realising how I, as white presenting individual from an ethnic minority background, was part of it. Since I joined the course, I was able to learn how to acknowledge the feelings of anger and frustration my colleagues have, and supported them to rephrasing and reframing these feelings, in order to move to constructive problem solving. The Brap team are skilled facilitators who turn uncomfortable conversations into opportunities for growth and learning, and if I do want to challenge racism and share my learning, I need to start by challenging more, pushing for accountability, and having those uncomfortable conversations we (and I) so much like to avoid.”
If you’re interested, please read the application pack attached and review our pre-application webinar on 14 February from 1 to 1.30pm. Attendance at the webinar isn’t compulsory but is a chance to find out more about the programme. It will also be recorded for those who can’t make it. Please get in touch with Rachael Tyler Rachael.Tyler@gstt.nhs.uk or Diana Cliff diana.cliff@gstt.nhs.uk if you have any questions about the programme. We’ll also send this invitation to our usual HPMA London Academy distribution list.
**PLEASE NOTE the first day of the Anti-Racist leadership development programme has been changed from 21st April to 28th April as we realise the 21st April is Eid and we don’t want to create any barriers for colleagues wishing to apply for the programme
